Mixed Feelings

Most people develop some activities as hobbies, and people usually choose those that reflect their motivation, gifts or talents. For this reason, it is important to take time to realize and feed those passions in life. I have been in Chicago for three years and I have seen a huge difference from my life in Colombia since I moved to Chicago. I do not have the same free time that I used to have in Colombia, which makes the experience of all those hobbies not to be more regular as in Colombia. Hobbies are those activities that people enjoy in their free time, those activities that makes them happy. Now that I am in Chicago, some of those hobbies have changed. 

Firstly, sports have been one of my favorite hobbies since I was five years old. When I was in Colombia, I used to swim and skate. However, when I arrived in Chicago, many of those hobbies changed. Swimming is one of my favorite sports. On the other hand, I can just swim in the summer and it is hard to find an outside pool in winter because of the snow. Moreover, I still swim inside when I go to the gym because they have a pool there. In addition, I do not have that much time to swim, because I am just going twice a week to the gym, and I usually spend two hours there, so I would rather just go to the gym and do some exercises. Furthermore, I practiced a lot of skating in Colombia because I started it when I was in high school. I used to go a roller skating with my friends in Colombia.

Additionally, make-up is one of my favorite hobbies too. I have loved make-up since I was eight years old. It was my dream to be a make-up artist when I was fifteen years old. However, when I came to Chicago, I changed my major to nursing because I wanted to study something that would help people and also help me to find a job easily. I used to take make-up classes on Saturdays because I always wanted to make-up my mother and my grandmother on important days such as graduations, New Year and Christmas. Make-up is my real passion and it is something that I really adore. I also used to go to many fancy stores in Colombia to buy a lot of make-up because I wanted to try products and see the make-up before buying it. However, I do not have the same time to go to stores in Chicago, because I am always busy or doing homework. Some Americans prefer to buy online than in stores, and I have also found it easy to buy online than going to stores, so I would rather buy it online when I have free time. For this reason, I love make-up and also love watching some make-up YouTubers.

Furthermore, I love playing piano. My father was my teacher because he also plays piano. I used to play piano in my free time in Colombia because I felt as if I could express my feelings and emotions, because music helps people to express all those things that people will never say. I plan on taking some piano classes at Harold Washington College to keep with this hobby. I have a piano in my house in Colombia. However, I live with roommates, and they do not like noise at home. I was in a group in Colombia, but we used to play piano in the church on Sunday and there are not any churches downtown, where I can play piano with Spanish melodies.

On the whole, enjoying leisure activities is a significant part of people’ life, and it will prevent them from find themselves stuck in a weekly routine. Most of the time the same routine becomes boring. That is why my leisure activities are sports, make-up and piano. People need to have many leisure activities to practice in their free time. When people cannot do their preferred hobbies, that is the moment when it becomes a mix of feelings because people want to spend the same time, in the same hobbies as they used to do in their country.
