Missing Memories

Missing Memories

Nowadays, people can easily order many things and get everything that they want. People can order food, vegetables, and clothes with a few clicks. When people order something, a delivery person will bring that to their house. Since I do not really like going out, in Korea, I enjoyed internet shopping and eating delivery food. I was happy that I could order anything at home at any time. In particular, I always ordered delivery food on rainy days. The reasons I preferred delivery service were it was fast, and had less restriction of time and place. Since I came to the United States, I do not use delivery service very often anymore. I realized that there are many restrictions on delivery so I had to give up my habits that I had in Korea.

When I was living in Korea, I could order whatever I wanted including food. Many Koreans enjoy eating food or snacks at night. I had various choices regardless how late it was. Many Korean restaurants are open passed midnight. Thus, when I had a late meal after 1 am, I could order food without big restriction and now I feel a great longing for that. Since I came to Chicago, I do not have many choices like in Korea. In addition, in Korea, when I went to the market and could not carry my packages back, I could deliver it directly to my home for free. I used to use the service very well. However, in the United States, I have to deal with it by myself. Since I cannot bring a lot of food by myself to my house, I cannot easily go to the market alone.

In addition, I did not have to spend a long time waiting for my delivery. I hate waiting long to get my delivery. I can get stressed out if I do not have it when I need it. In Korea, when I ordered something, it arrived on the day I placed the order, and usually not more than three or four days. However, in Chicago, I have to wait for my products for a long time. Even though I am using Amazon Prime, I still need to wait for two or three days to get it, and it takes more than a week by regular delivery. If I need something urgently, I have to go to store and buy it. However, it is hard to find all products that I want in the store.

Furthermore, I miss the convenience of Korea where I could get delivery anywhere. I could deliver food indoors or outdoors. Koreans have a culture of having delivery food even in parks or by the riverside. I often ordered pizza or fried chicken in Korea. I did not have to buy it in advance even if I and my friends were hanging out in a park, we could search for food and order. After I ordered, the delivery man would bring the food to me right away. For Koreans, that delivery service is very convenient and most people may have used it at least once in their life. On the other hand, in the U.S., there is no such culture as ordering food to public places. I miss that time because I think it is a meaningful experience to sit around with friends outside and order delicious food.

In conclusion, after I came to the United States, what changed is not only fast delivery, but also the memories I had with my friends. I cannot use delivery service as widely as in Korea. I tend to wait a long time for delivery, and I am restricted to the place where I receive food. Thus, I have lost my habits and memories that I had in Korea for twenty years. However, there are some points that I realized since I arrive in Chicago. I realized that it is better to enjoy waiting for my delivery with happy expectations than being upset. I could meet my friends and go shopping together instead of lying in my bed alone. If I keep trying to be relaxed and enjoy the situations I am in, I believe that someday I can become such a flexible person who enjoys the time whether delivery is fast or slow.

  1. Free delivery at market in Korea is great easiness. My experience is opposite from yours. In Turkey, online shopping is not common, and there is no free delivery at markets.
